Late Personal Opinion Post #2: Why You Shouldn't be Poor or Old in America

I should start by blatantly stating my political views. I am what you might call a "dirty, stinking, liberal".

If you made it through that, good for you. You're either part of my liberal brethren or you have enough sense in your head to respect the opinions of others instead of taking a label like "liberal" and assuming the worst. I appreciate that.

Now, what's the cause for all this political ruckus on a blog written by a woman who doesn't care too much for politics in general? All this talk of a debt crisis and money management has gotten my panties in a twist, so to speak anyway.

I'm not a political genius. In fact, I don't know much of anything about politics. I took three weeks of a political science class before deciding to take another theater class instead. It just isn't my cup of tea. But when I happen to hear things about how, in order to save money, we should cut healthcare (especially medicare) or other public aid, it upsets me. I have a hard time identifying with a country who generally believes that, if you're poor (or even in the middle class), sick, old, disabled, or anything else that makes you "less than", you're not worth helping. A lot of conservative Christians who toot that horn don't believe in evolution but apparently they still believe in survival of the fittest. They're doing their damn best to make sure they're labeled the "fittest", anyway.

The deterioration of this country is starting to make me sick. And while I'm trying to find a way to move somewhere that doesn't give me a dystopian feeling in my stomach, my government is coming up with ideas on how to make it impossible for me to leave. After all, if I move to New Zealand, who's going to make up for the taxes I won't be paying? It's okay, they'll just take away a poor family's food stamps. After all, it's the American way.

  1. Hm. So. I found you today on Ravelry. A place where I wasn't expecting to find a blog like yours. Your profile caught my attention because your birthday is one day before mine. I thought, a Libra has always good taste and tons of insights. Then I got curious about your blog. Anyways. I agree with you on everything you just said in this post. Your writing is very captivating. I enjoyed it even though English is not my mother's tongue and I avoid it sometimes. I live in the United States because my husband is Texan. We're both pretty scared of living here although it's going to be hard to get out. I look forward to subscribing to your blog.
    Regards,
    A.
